Dr. Jayne Engle

Jayne Engle, program director, McConnell Foundation, Tiohtià:ke | Montréal

Dr. Jayne Engle has led the cities & places portfolio and Cities for People at the McConnell Foundation since 2013, where her team built an ecosystemic approach to supporting community resilience, civic engagement and inclusive urban innovation. Initiatives seeded included Participatory Canada, Civic-Indigenous 7.0, RegX (regulatory experimentation), Future Cities Canada, Community Wealth, and the Emergence Room.

Prior to McConnell Jayne worked globally at the intersection of city planning, long-range policy innovation, participatory research, governance design, and economic and social change. Her experience ranges from civic regeneration in many cities of the US, Canada, and Western Europe, to contexts of deep societal change, such as Central and Eastern Europe following the fall of the Soviet Union, and Haiti after the catastrophic 2010 earthquake, where she carried out post-disaster community research.

Jayne is passionate about bridging transformative action on the ground with policy and systems change, particularly in ways that foster freedom and flourishing of people. She holds a PhD in Urban Planning, Policy and Design from McGill University in Montreal, where she is Adjunct Professor. She’s particularly excited about a new collaborative book project called Sacred Civics, exploring ways to transcend current paradigms and awaken seven-generation cities.
